Trunyan, Bali - a mysterious thomb village

The village of Trunyan is closely clamped between the lake and the outer rim of the crater Batur, an almighty Kintamani volcano. It is a Bali Aga village, inhabited by descendants of the original Balinese, people who predate the arrival of Hindu Majapahit kingdom in the 16th century. It is famous for Pura Pancering Jagat temple, but unfortunately visitors are not allowed inside. There is also a traditional couple Bali Aga-style housing, and a large Banyan Tree, which is said to be over 1100 years. In sub-Kuban village near Trunyan is a mysterious cemetery that is separated by the lake and accessible only by boat - there is no path along steep walls of the crater rim.

The village of Trunyan itself is located on the shores of Lake Batur. This site is inaccessible except by boat, and it takes about half an hour in the calm waters. Getting to Lake Batur lasts about two hours drive north-east of Denpasar on the main road in Buleleng and Bangli regency.

Unlike the Balinese people, the people of Trunyan not cremate or bury their dead, but put in bamboo cages to decompose, but strangely there was no stench. A macabre collection of skulls and bones found on the stone platform and surrounding areas.

The bodies do not produce bad odors because of the fragrant scents of a large tree Taru Menyan increasingly close. Taru means “tree” and Menyan means “pleasant smell.” The name of Terunyan was also drawn from these two words.

The Trunyan women are banned from visiting the cemetery where a corpse is ensured. This follows the deeply rooted belief that if a woman comes to the cemetery while a corpse is underway, there will be a disaster in the village, such as a landslide or volcanic eruption. These events have been frequent in the village of history, but if women have something to do with it is a matter of opinion.

Kedisan

You can visit both the village of Trunyan Kuban and the cemetery boat chartered Kedisan. Unfortunately, nowadays, the boat trips are now obvious tourist traps, guides and touts strongly advise you to donate your money to the temple project or leave a donation for the dead. These touts ruin another fascinating experience.
