Among the thousands of small islands of Indonesia is one called Komodo - a mountainous stretch of volcanic rock covered with grass, palm trees and small pockets of jungle. This small island, 22 miles (35 km) long, with some others nearby, is the only habitat of the world’s largest lizard. The people of Komodo call this animal “ora.” Elsewhere, it is known as the island of Komodo monitor or most popular, the Komodo dragon.

Komodo can reach 10 feet long and weigh 300 pounds or more - especially after a meal. They are the top predators in their habitat, feeding on wild boar, deer, buffalo, dogs, goats, rats, snakes, birds, at a time, and - once in a while - human. They hunt by ambush, hiding in the scrub brush along trails and in the tall grass savannah. Despite their appearance logging, time can move at an alarming rate when they want, slit their hiding places and sprint to their victims surprised. They can not sustain a long pursuit, but often all they have to submit their prey is biting.

Compare the measure komodo adult with human, arent they big?
Komodo carry toxic bacteria in the mouth, even if they are not taken immediately to their prey, the attack is often fatal. Thanks to their long forked language (time and other lizards are closely related to snakes), they follow the scent of their prey like wounded animals slowly weakens the bite of infected - a process which can take several days. When the victim can no longer escape, Komodo moves to kill him. Komodo are voracious eaters. They devour every bit of their prey - bones, fur, hooves - ripping off huge chunks with their razor-sharp serrated teeth and swallow the pieces together. Like all predators, time serve an important ecological function: they preserve the ecological stability by ensuring that preyspecies (deer, for example) are not overpopulate and degrade their island habitat.

Komodo are reptiles. They do not need to eat as many times as large mammal predators such as tigers. Accordingly, the small island of Komodo can support a number of these giant lizards - their total population on the island is estimated at approximately 4000 to 5000 animals. The same amount of territory can not support a few dozen tigers. However, these figures do not tell the whole. The Komodo population includes about 350 breeding females. And as human populations grow, ora limited habitat shrinks. On some islands, coexistence between peoples and giant lizards is increasingly uneasy. The island of Komodo is now a popular attraction ecotourist. The Indonesian government is trying to regulate traffic so that the disruption of the hour is reduced to a minimum.
